Dresden logistics start-up optimises container utilisation

Container transports are commonplace for goods transport. The box-shaped containers characterize the image of ports, transhipment sites and means of transport. Containers are often associated with the transport of solid objects. Less well known is that they are also widely used for the transport of liquids and chemical substances. This is where the Dresden logistics start-up Packwise comes in. This article is based on the unique List of the 200 largest logistics companies in Germany.

  • Article based on database of the 200 most important logistic companies in Germany
  • Detailed information on the field of activity (transport logistics, warehouse logistics, industrial logistics, pharmaceutical logistics, food logistics, port logistics, etc.)

Internet of things for more efficiency

There are an estimated 300 million liquid containers in use worldwide, 10 million in Germany alone. The so-called IBC containers (IBC = Intermediate Bulk Container) are used in the food and chemical industries, among others. The problem: their use is often suboptimal. The containers are empty 80 percent of the time and block unused storage areas. Packwise wants to change this. The solution: the Smart Cap – a small digital device that is attached to the container and provides important information about the level, temperature or location of the container.

With this intelligent information, which is collected centrally on an Internet platform, evaluated and used for control purposes, supply chains can be optimized and transport processes can be designed more efficiently. The Smart Cap also makes the IBC container a self-thinking and self-acting device. The container can independently trigger repeat orders when critical brands are reached. This is a typical solution from the “Internet of things” sector.

The goal of the start-up, which was founded in 2017 in the Dresden coworking center “Impact Hub”: to make the same transport volume of liquids possible with considerably less use of containers. This saves storage space, costs, transport effort and, last but not least, is more environmentally friendly.
