The name EDEKA is the abbreviation for “Einkaufsgenossenschaft der Kolonialwarenhändler im Halleschen Torbezirk zu Berlin”. The EDEKA group started with the merger of 21 Berlin retail merchants in 1898, which has developed into Germany’s largest trading company and the largest German food retailer over the course of more than 120 years. The historical name already refers to food as a focal point and the cooperative principle. Today, the EDEKA group employs a total of around 381,000 people.
