The largest industrial company in Dortmund is Wilo SE with a turnover of 1.5 billion euros (2019). Wilo SE is also part of our list of the largest industrial companies in Germany. The company is a leading manufacturer of pumps and pump systems. Wilo was created in its current form in 2002 when the two legally independent companies Wilo GmbH and Wilo-Samson AG merged. Wilo pumps are used in heating, cooling and air-conditioning technology, but also in water supply and disposal. The company has approx. 7,800 employees, of which approx. one third work in Germany. The main production sites are Dortmund Hof and Oschersleben. Wilo also produces in nine other countries and at 12 locations worldwide. The Wilo success story: Pump and pump systems
The company name Wilo is derived from Wilhelm Opländer, the founder of the company. In 1872, he established a copper and brass goods factory in Dortmund and initially supplied the beverage industry with distillation plants. Later, central heating construction was added as a business field, which made it inevitable that the company would focus on pump technology. In the 1920s, the company became a pioneer in the field of circulating pumps. After the Second World War, the business was consistently expanded and the path was taken abroad.
