From a Bavarian aircraft engine manufacturer to a global automotive group
In 1916 the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke were founded in Munich, which changed its name to BMW in 1922. Aircraft engines and motorcycles initially formed the BMW business, and in 1928 automobile production was started in Eisenach. After the Second World War, car production was relocated to Munich. Today BMW is a globally operating group. Besides the BMW brand for cars and motorcycles, the company also stands for the British car brands Mini and Rolls-Royce. BMW is 46.8 percent owned by Susanne Klatten and her brother Stefan Quandt, both members of the Quandt industrialist family, who are among the richest Germans. The remaining shares are in free float.
