With sales of €27.1 billion (2019), METRO AG in Düsseldorf is Germany’s highest-turnover wholesale company. The name “Metro” has been around since 1963 when the first Metro wholesale store opened in Essen. However, today’s METRO AG was not created until 2017. At that time, the old Metro Group was split into two successor groups in a complicated restructuring process: METRO and CECONOMY. METRO AG thereby combined the food division of the group with the Metro Cash & Carry stores and the supermarket chain Real. In February 2020, however, the new group divested itself of Real. In principle, only the Metro wholesale stores remained. This article is based on the unique List of the 400 largest German trading companies.

Metro wholesale stores in 27 countries in Europe and Asia
In terms of wholesale stores, METRO is internationally positioned – with a focus on Europe and Asia. Of the total of around 760 Metro Cash & Carry stores, just over 100 are located in Germany. They are operated under the umbrella of Metro Deutschland GmbH. In total, there are Metro wholesale stores in 27 countries. In Europe, France is the country with the most Metro locations besides Germany (almost 100 stores). Outside Europe, the most important Metro countries (number of stores in brackets, as of 2019) are Russia (68), China (64), Ukraine (33), Turkey (27), Vietnam (19) and India (14). METRO AG employs a total of more than 100,000 people.
