List of 3 Hidden Champions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is still considered a region of Germany characterized by large-scale agriculture and tourism. However, the state is also home to renowned medium-sized companies that were able to establish themselves here after reunification. 1. MV WERFTEN, Wismar: approx. 111 million euros turnover

MV WERFTEN is a group of companies comprising several shipyards that build ships in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Locations, each with their own companies, exist in Wismar, Stralsund and Rostock – cities that all have a long shipyard tradition. MV Werften GmbH acts as the umbrella company and has existed since 2016. MV Werften focuses on the construction of cruise ships, especially river cruise ships. The shipyard group was formed after the Chinese tourism company Genting Hong Kong acquired a majority stake in Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven. Genting decided to merge the Lloyd yards in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern under the name MV Werften. MV Werften employs around 3,100 people.

2. Rügen Fisch AG, Saßnitz: 140 million euros turnover

Rügen Fisch is the German market leader in the production of canned fish. The company emerged from VEB Ostseefischerei Mecklenburg, founded in 1949, which was already the leading fish processor in the GDR. After reunification, the company was continued in private enterprise. In 2009 Rügen Fisch took over the canned fish producer “Hawesta”, in 2011 “Lysell”. As a result, Rügen Fisch became the largest German supplier of canned fish. Rügen Fisch brands are “Hawesta”, “Lysell”, “Ostsee Fisch”, “Rügen Fisch” and “Rügen Krone”. In addition, there are several other private labels. Production takes place in Saßnitz, Lübeck-Schlutup, Rostock and Kretinga (Lithuania). Rügen Fisch employs around 850 people.

3. CENTOGENE GmbH, Rostock: 146 million US dollars

CENTOGENE was founded in 2006 and is involved in the research and diagnosis of rare diseases. The aim is to provide a comprehensive digital database with clinical, genetic and multi-omic data in order to better detect and treat such diseases. To this end, CENTOGENE has developed a globally usable database platform. To date, it contains 3.9 billion data from around 600,000 patients from over 120 countries. CENTOGENE’s COVID-19 testing activities recently brought a significant leap in sales. Test centres have been and are being operated at several airports in cooperation with Lufthansa. The company is listed on the US technology exchange NASDAQ.
