This article was written as part of the research process for our list of the 100 largest food manufacturers in Switzerland. The list contains a wealth of information, such as turnover figures, sector classifications, areas of activity, address data, contact details suitable for serial letters and names of the management.
Switzerland is known throughout the world not only for its chocolate and cheese, but also for the outstanding quality of its bakery products. The bakery industry in Switzerland combines tradition and innovation and reflects the country’s cultural richness. From artisan bakeries to large industrial companies, Swiss bakery manufacturers are characterised by the use of high-quality ingredients, sustainable processes and a focus on satisfying local and international tastes. In this article, we present the three most important baked goods manufacturers in Switzerland: ARYTZA AG, FFB-Group, Valora Holding AG.
1. ARYZTA AG
ARYZTA AG, based in Zurich, is an international company that specialises in convenience bakery products and offers a wide range of in-store bakery solutions. The product portfolio includes bread, rolls, morning pastries and savoury bakery products that are designed to be baked or defrosted at the point of sale to stay fresh throughout the day. ARYZTA takes a ‘multi-local’ approach, tailoring operations to the needs of individual markets by utilising local management teams. This structure enables efficient decision-making, shorter supply chains and faster responses to customer and consumer demands. The company operates in the bake-off segment, a high-value and growing part of the bakery market, which accounts for around 25% of the industry and is driven by consumer demand for freshness and quality. ARYZTA focuses on innovation, efficiency and the use of high-quality ingredients to maintain its competitive advantage while fostering close relationships with its customers.
Update 2024: With a current market capitalisation of EUR 1.6 billion, the company continues to position itself as one of the most important players in its segment.
2. FFB-Group
The Fresh Food & Beverage Group (FFB Group) is a food production conglomerate that was formed in 2023 from the merger of JOWA AG and Bischofszell Nahrungsmittel AG (BINA). It operates as part of Migros Industry and includes other independent companies such as Aproz Sources Minérales, Bäckerei Hug and Sushi Mania SA. The group offers a wide range of food products for daily needs, from breakfast (‘Zmorge’) to dinner (‘Znacht’). The portfolio includes bakery and confectionery products, beverages (carbonated and non-carbonated), potato products, fruit and vegetables, ready meals and Asian cuisine. With around 4,400 employees at 150 locations in Switzerland, including almost 100 of its own bakeries and around 40 sushi corners, the FFB Group has a strong presence in the Swiss food industry. It also operates large production facilities to meet demand . In recent years, the Group’s net sales have grown steadily and have reached CHF 1.6 billion in 2023, reflecting its broad product range and market relevance
3. Valora Holding AG
Valora Holdng AG is a retail and food convenience company with a network of some 15,000 employees who work every day to provide people on the move with easily accessible, fast and fresh food. With 13 sales formats and around 2,800 points of sale at highly frequented locations in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Valora focuses on convenience and quality. The company pursues a multi-format strategy, focuses on strong own brands and utilises a vertically integrated value chain as the world’s leading manufacturer of pretzel-based bakery products.
