List of the 3 largest automotive suppliers for driver assistance systems

Today, driver assistance systems are standard even in smaller vehicles. Electronic support for greater driving safety and comfort is reflected in a wide range of applications. The classic “Navi”, distance warning systems, brake assistance and anti-lock braking systems are just a few examples. Digitalisation has opened up completely new possibilities for driving assistance – including autonomous driving. Place 1: Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart: 77.9 billion euros sales (2019)

Bosch is the largest automotive supplier in Germany and has a global presence with 403,000 employees in about 60 countries. It is a conglomerate with the Automotive Technology, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology business sectors. Driver assistance systems are developed in the Automotive Technology business sector (Mobility Solutions). Here Bosch supplies solutions in the areas of steering, braking, acceleration, environment sensors, localization, and connectivity. One of the first Bosch assistance applications was the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) introduced in 1995. Driving assistance systems are mainly assigned to the CC – Chassis Systems Control – division within Mobility Solutions. In 2018, the creation of a further division CS – Connected Mobility Solutions – for networked mobility was announced.

Place 2: Continental AG, Hanover: 44.5 billion euros sales (2019)

The name Continental is more familiar in connection with car tyres. And indeed, tire production (Rubber Technologies) continues to be a mainstay of the business. Continental’s second main pillar is the Automotive Technologies division with the Autonomous Mobility and Safety (AMS), Vehicle Networking and Information (VNI) and Vitesco Technologies divisions. This division also deals with driving assistance – preferably as a preliminary stage to autonomous driving. The focus here is on sensor technology, camera systems and automated tire pressure monitoring. With approximately 241,000 employees in 60 countries, Continental is the number 2 automotive supplier in Germany and worldwide and is a sister company of Schaeffler AG.

Place 3: ZF Friedrichshafen, Friedrichshafen: 36.5 billion euros sales (2019)

With around 148,000 employees worldwide, ZF Friedrichshafen is the third largest German automotive supplier and stands above all for drive and chassis technology for vehicles – a logical development of the company’s origins as a gearwheel factory. In addition to this core business, ZF Friedrichshafen also deals with the future of driving and mobility in several innovative business units. These activities are bundled in the company’s own subsidiary Zukunft Mobility GmbH. The subsidiary with offices in Ingolstadt and Regensburg functions as a competence center for driving assistance, vehicle safety and autonomous driving. Software development, sensor technology, simulation and test procedures for driver assistance systems are the main areas of activity.
