Place 1: Freudenberg SE, Weinheim: 9.5 billion euros sales (2019)

Freudenberg in Weinheim, not far from Heidelberg and Mannheim, is a family-owned company that started out as a tannery as early as the mid-19th century and has developed into a major supplier to various industries, including the automotive industry. Freudenberg manufactures a wide range of products from chemical raw materials. In particular, seals, vibration control products and filters are produced for car manufacturers, but also nonwovens for vehicle interiors. In addition, Freudeberg offers lubricants and release agents for cars and car care products. Today, the company employs almost 49,000 people and is active in around 60 countries worldwide.

Place 2: REHAU AG + Co, Rehau: 3.5 billion euros turnover (2018)

REHAU is a group of companies that manufactures polymer-based plastics and supplies them to various industries. The business is divided into the Automotive, Building and Infrastructure Solutions, Furniture Solutions, Window Solutions and Industrial Solutions divisions. Although the group’s headquarters are in Switzerland (Muri near Bern), the German subsidiary Rehau AG + Co – responsible for the automotive and industrial sectors – is based in Rehau in the Bavarian Vogtland. It accounts for approx. 60 percent of REHAU sales. Various plastic components for vehicles such as fenders, rear spoilers, bumpers, strips, rails, edgings, etc. are produced here. REHAU has around 20,000 employees worldwide.

Place 3: Grammer AG, Amberg, 2.0 billion euros sales (2019)

The history of Grammer in Amberg in the Upper Palatinate began as early as 1880 with a classic craft business – a saddlery. Plastic components and systems for vehicle interiors as well as seats for trucks, buses and trains – today these are the two pillars of Grammer’s business: in principle, a consistent continuation of the original business model. The Automotive division accounts for about two thirds of sales. Here, Grammer manufactures center consoles, armrests, headrests and other interior parts made of plastic.
