Place 1: Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart: 77.9 billion euros sales (2019)

Robert Bosch founded a backyard workshop for precision mechanics and electrical engineering in Stuttgart in 1886. Over the years, it developed into one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. Bosch is not just a supplier, however, but a broad-based conglomerate. In addition to automotive technology, the company is also involved in consumer goods (household appliances, power tools), building, energy and industrial technology. In the area of automotive technology, Bosch supplies the automotive industry with injection technology and solutions for engine management, exhaust aftertreatment, braking systems and driver assistance. Newer business fields include components for electric drives and networked mobility services. Bosch manufactures at 85 locations in Germany with almost 140,000 associates and is represented in over 60 countries worldwide with a total of around 410,000 associates.

Place 2: ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Friedrichshafen: 36.5 billion euros sales (2019)

ZF Friedrichshafen can look back on a company history of over one hundred years, which began in 1915. Today, the company is one of the ten largest automotive suppliers worldwide and has 241 locations in 41 countries (as of 2019). Nearly half of its sales are generated in Europe, around 30 percent in North America and one fifth in the Asia-Pacific region. ZF in the company name stands for “gear factory”. In a figurative sense, the company still follows this name today. ZF Friedrichshafen is a leading supplier in the field of driveline and chassis technology (transmissions, clutches, axles, steering systems, etc.). In extension of this core business, the company also supplies industrial technology with a focus on driveline and control systems. ZF Friedrichshafen employs approximately 148,000 people worldwide.

Place 3: Eberspächer Gruppe GmbH & Co. KG, Esslingen am Neckar, 4.6 billion Euro sales (2018)

Eberspächer in Esslingen has emerged from a handicraft business for roof glazing founded by Jakob Eberspächer in 1865. The company has been active in the automotive industry since 1932/33. Today, the company is a supplier for almost all well-known car manufacturers and has over 80 locations in 29 countries worldwide. Over 70 percent of the turnover is generated outside Germany. Eberspächer has about 10,000 employees and is a leading manufacturer of exhaust technology, vehicle heaters and air conditioning systems. Since recently, the company has also been involved in the field of vehicle electronics. The focus here is on electronic control units for economical fuel consumption and electronic control of vehicle heaters.
