1. Sandoz Pharmaceuticals AG, Rotkreuz: $9.6 billion in sales (Sandoz subgroup sales)

Sandoz is a traditional name in the Swiss chemical industry. Until the 1995 merger with Ciba-Geigy to form Novartis, Sandoz was an independent group. The name initially disappeared with the merger, but was reactivated in 2003. Since then, Sandoz has stood as a subgroup for the generics division of Novartis. Sandoz Pharmaceuticals is the Swiss subsidiary of Sandoz, with headquarters in Holzkirchen (Germany). Sandoz stands for a wide range of off-patent pharmaceuticals (prescription and over-the-counter medicines, biosimilars). The products are marketed under the brands “Sandoz”, “Hexal” and “1A Pharma”.

2. Sika AG, Baar: CHF 7.9 billion in sales

The name Sika has stood for Swiss specialty chemicals for over 100 years. The company was founded in Zurich in 1910 and has developed into a globally operating group with over 17,000 employees as the Sika Group. Sika offers a wide range of chemical-based solutions for the construction and manufacturing industries. Construction solutions relate to, for example: concrete and cement admixtures, sealants, industrial flooring, repair materials, agents for corrosion, fire and tank protection. Sika’s industrial markets include car manufacturers, machine builders, railroad and shipbuilding, solar equipment manufacturers and household appliance manufacturers. Sika AG in Baar acts as the group holding company.

3. Octapharma AG, Lachen: 2.4 billion euros in sales

Octapharma was founded in 1983 by Wolfgang Marguerre and is still owner-managed. The company specializes in the manufacture of products from blood plasma and based on genetic engineering processes (production of recombinant proteins). They are used for the treatment of blood coagulation disorders and find applications in immunotherapies and intensive care medicine. Octapharma currently employs around 9,000 people at 31 sites. The products are sold worldwide. Research and development are located in Germany and Austria at the sites in Vienna, Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg.
