The Bavarian building materials industry comprises some 450 companies with approx. 13,000 jobs. Each year, it produces 150 million tonnes of building materials, 15 million tonnes of concrete parts and products and 11 million cubic metres of ready-mix concrete. Place 1: Gebr. Knauf KG, Iphofen: 7.6 billion euros turnover (2019)

Originally Knauf was a gypsum works in Saarland, but after the 2nd World War the company was re-founded with a similar business model in Iphofen, Bavaria. In the following decades, the family business developed into a leading global manufacturer of drywall, flooring, plaster and façade systems. Gypsum continues to play a major role in this. Knauf is represented in 86 countries and employs 35,000 people.

Place 2: REHAU AG + Co, Muri bei Bern/Rehau, approx. 2 billion euros turnover

REHAU has its Bavarian origins in the company name, but is now a Swiss corporation. The head office is still located in Rehau bei Hof. In addition, the construction supply business of the group is operated from Erlangen-Eltersdorf. REHAU manufactures a wide range of supplier products for various industries. In the construction sector, components for structural and civil engineering, interior design and industrial construction are supplied.

Place 3: OSRAM GmbH, Munich: 1.8 billion euros sales (2019)

OSRAM was part of Siemens until 2013 and as a brand is known primarily for incandescent lamps. This business was sold to a Chinese consortium in 2016. Today the name stands for light and lighting technology in various areas. In addition to a strong focus on the automotive industry, OSRAM also supplies solutions for interior and exterior lighting in buildings and for traffic infrastructure. The group has almost 26,000 employees.
