Place 1: Otto (GmbH & Co KG), Hamburg: 13.4 billion euros turnover (2018/19)

The first Otto catalogue published in 1950 offered 28 different shoes. The range was quickly expanded to include clothing and fashion accessories. This soon made Otto the largest German mail order company. Thanks to a consistent and early conversion to e-commerce, this has remained so until today. Today, customers can buy fashion and other goods in about 100 Otto online shops. Three-quarters of the Group’s turnover is generated in online retailing. Only Amazon sells more in Germany.

Place 2: Zalando SE, Berlin: 6.5 billion euros turnover (2019)

Zalando wrote advertising history with the “cry of happiness”. In 2008, the company from the capital’s start-up scene started with the online trade of shoes. Today it describes itself as Europe’s leading online platform with offers for customers in 17 countries. Shoes are still the core business, but the product range has been expanded in the meantime. Zalando customers can also find fashion, cosmetics and accessories on the Zalando website. The company distributes around 2,800 brands from a wide range of manufacturers.

Place 3: Klingel Group (K – Mail Order GmbH & Co. KG), Pforzheim: 1.0 billion euros sales (2018)

Klingel is a traditional German mail order company that was founded just a few years after the 1st World War. Women’s and men’s fashion, watches and jewellery, shoes and accessories have always been a focal point of Klingel’s range of products, along with other areas. Traditional catalogue mail order still has its place at Klingel alongside e-commerce. This is probably due to the fact that the target group 50+ is especially addressed.
