The economy of the southwest German federal state is mainly characterised by mechanical engineering and car production. Place 1: Südzucker AG, Mannheim: EUR 6.75 billion sales (2018/19)

The merger of a number of regional sugar factories in 1926 has developed into the largest sugar producer in the world. Südzucker is also one of the largest food companies in Germany. Sugar production continues to be the core business. In addition, there are the CropEnergies (bioethanol), Fruit (fruit preparations, fruit juice concentrates) and Specialities (ingredients for food and pet food, frozen ready meals, starch, food packaging) business segments. Südzucker has over 19,000 employees.

Place 2: FrieslandCampina Germany GmbH, Heilbronn: approx. EUR 1 billion (2019)

FrieslandCampina Germany emerged from the former Südmilch AG and is the German subsidiary of Koninklijke FrieslandCampina – a Dutch milk processor. With annual sales of 11.6 billion euros (2018), Koninklijke FrieslandCampina is one of the world’s largest producers of dairy products and employs around 24,000 people. In Germany, the company employs approximately 1,200 people at its locations in Düsseldorf, Heilbronn, Cologne and Schefflenz. FrieslandCampina products can be found in almost all German food markets – including the Tuffi and Landliebe brands.

Place 3: Naturin Viscofan GmbH, Weinheim: approx. 900 million euros turnover (2019, Group)

In 1933 the Naturin GmbH was founded in Weinheim, which is considered a pioneer in Germany in the production of artificial casings for sausage production. Today, the company is part of the Spanish Viscofan Group, which also specialises in sausage casings and packaging, as Naturin Viscofan GmbH.
