1st place: thyssenkrupp AG, Essen: Revenues of €42.0 Billion (2019)
thyssenkrupp is the result of the consolidation of the German steel industry in the 1990s and was formed in 1999 through the merger of Friedrich Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp with Thyssen AG. Steel continues to form the business model. thyssenkrupp is active as a supplier of steel parts or steel-based products to various sectors – including auto manufacture, mining and metals, energy producers, the aerospace industry and shipbuilding. The Group has 162,000 employees.
2nd place: HELLA GmbH & Co. KGaA, Lippstadt: Revenues of €7.0 Billion (2018/19)
The name says it all – HELLA is a leading manufacturer of headlights and lighting technology for vehicles and a major automotive supplier. Founded in 1899, the company has been involved in headlamp production since 1908. The business is divided into the Automotive, Aftermarket and Special Applications segments. Today, HELLA has almost 39,000 employees and is represented in around 35 countries. In addition to industrial production, HELLA has one of the largest trading organisations for automotive parts and accessories in Europe.
3rd place: Rheinmetall AG, Düsseldorf: Revenues of €6.3 Billion (2019)
Founded in 1889 as a munitions factory, Rheinmetall is Germany’s leading armaments group. Alongside the Defence sector, the Automotive sector is a second pillar (approx. 45 percent share of sales). This is what the subsidiary Rheinmetall Automotive AG stands for. In the Defence sector, Rheinmetall manufactures weapons and ammunition, electronic defence technology and vehicle systems. The Automotive sector focuses on the manufacture of pistons and slide bearings. Rheinmetall employs a workforce of just under 26,000, 11,000 of whom work in the Automotive sector.
