List of the 3 Largest Mechanical Engineering Companies in Hamburg

With approximately 11,000 employees, Hamburg is one of the smaller mechanical engineering locations in Germany. Nevertheless, major machine and plant manufacturers are based here. They generate their sales primarily outside the Free and Hanseatic City. These are the three largest companies.

1st place: Jungheinrich AG, Hamburg: 4.1 billion euros in net sales (2019)

Jungheinrich is a foundation of the Economic Miracle years. Since 1953, the Hamburg-based company has stood for industrial trucks, warehousing, and material flow technology. Jungheinrich employs some 18,000 people and sells in over 120 countries.

Forklift trucks, high-rack stackers, pallet trucks and tractors – these are typical Jungheinrich products. The company ranks third in this field worldwide and second in Europe. A second mainstay is (manual and automatic) shelving systems.

2nd place: Nordex SE, Hamburg: 3.3 billion euros in sales (2019)

Although Nordex’s legal domicile is in Rostock, its head office is located in Hamburg-Langenhorn. The name Nordex has stood for wind turbines since 1985. The business concentrates on low-wind turbines for land-based locations.

The largest shareholder with a stake of over one third is the Spanish conglomerate Acciona. The rest is in free float. Nordex has branches and subsidiaries in 19 countries and employs almost 7,000 people.

3rd place: Hauni Maschinenbau GmbH, Hamburg: EUR 2.5 billion sales (Körber Group, 2018)

Hauni Maschinenbau is the core company of the Körber Group, also based in Hamburg. Its activities are now bundled by Körber AG as the holding company. Hauni Maschinenbau has about 4,000 employees and the Körber Group has about 10,000.

Since its foundation in 1946, Hauni Maschinenbau has been a specialist in machinery and equipment for the tobacco industry. The product portfolio includes machines for all process steps in tobacco processing and cigarette manufacturing.
