List of the 3 Largest Semiconductor Companies in Germany

The semiconductor industry is a sub-sector of the electrical industry that deals with semiconductor production. These are electrically conductive, solid materials that are used in electronics (for example in microprocessors or microcontrollers). Many semiconductor components are made of silicon. In this article, we present the 3 largest semiconductor manufacturers in Germany.

1st place: Infineon Technologies AG, Neubiberg: Euro 8.0 billion in revenues (2018/19)

Infineon Technologies has been around since 1999, when Siemens spun off its semiconductor business into a new company. Today, Infineon is mainly in free float and Siemens no longer holds any shares. The company has more than 41,000 employees and operates worldwide.

Semiconductor production continues to be Infineon’s core business. It is divided into the Automotive, Digital Security Solutions, Industrial Power Control, and Power Management & Multimarket divisions. For the automotive industry, Infineon supplies semiconductor products for use in powertrains, comfort electronics, and security systems. The company also manufactures semiconductors for telephony, household appliances, computer electronics, and machinery.

2nd place: Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH, Oberkochen: 1.6 billion euros in sales (2018/19)

Carl Zeiss SMT has been a subsidiary of Carl Zeiss AG since the end of 2016 with an almost 25 percent shareholding of the Dutch company ASML. The abbreviation SMT stands for Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology. The subsidiary bundles the semiconductor activities of the Zeiss Group. Carl Zeiss SMT employs around 2,800 people at five locations.

The business focuses on optics for semiconductor manufacturing. They specialize in photolithography – a central method of semiconductor and microsystems technology for the production of integrated circuits. In addition, Carl Zeiss SMT manufactures many other optics, such as optical parts for lasers.

3rd place: Siltronic AG, Munich: 1.3 billion euros (2019)

Siltronic was founded in 1968 as Wacker Chemitronik GmbH. This became Siltronic in 1996. There is still a connection to the Wacker Chemie Group. He holds just over 30 percent of Siltronic’s shares, the rest of the shares are in free float.

Siltronic has almost 4,000 employees and, apart from Germany, produces in the USA (Portland) and in Singapore. The company is entirely focused on silicon wafers. These are circular, thin silicon plates used in microelectronics, photovoltaics and microsystems technology. They are used as electronic components.
