1.Clariant Ltd, Muttenz: CHF 5.2 billion sales

Clariant in Muttenz near Basel is a spin-off from the former Sandoz Group. The spin-off took place in 1995 – one year before Sandoz merged with Ciba Geigy to form Novartis. Today, Clariant is active in the Care Chemicals, Catalysis, Natural Resources and Plastics & Coatings business areas (over 40 percent of sales). This covers a broad spectrum of specialty chemicals. The main customers for Clariant products are the automotive, construction, electronics, cosmetics, plastics, crop protection and pharmaceutical industries. Sales are generated worldwide, one third in Europe and one quarter in the Asia-Pacific region. The Group has 18,000 employees worldwide.

2. EMS-CHEMIE HOLDING AG, Domat/Ems: CHF 1.8 billion sales

EMS-CHEMIE is a Swiss manufacturer of high-performance plastics and specialty chemical products. The company’s history began in 1936 with the founding of Holzverzuckerungs AG (Hovag) in Zurich. In 1960 this became Emser Werke AG, and in 1962 EMS CHEMIE HOLDING AG. The subsidiary EMS-GRILLTEC is responsible for specialty chemicals. EMS-GRILLTEC produces hotmelt adhesives, release and adhesive yarns, specialty fibers and powder coatings. Another company of the specialty chemicals division – EMS-PATVAG (igniters for airbags) was sold in 2019. The group employs over 2,600 people, is present in 22 countries and has 26 production sites in 16 countries.

3. Archroma Management GmbH, Pratteln: CHF 1.2 billion in sales.

Archroma was founded in 2013 as a Clariant spin-off. In 2015, it acquired BASF’s textile chemicals business. At the end of 2021, the company’s headquarters were moved from Reinach near Basel to nearby Pratteln. The company is a manufacturer of specialty chemicals used in the textile industry, packaging, paper manufacturing, coatings, adhesives and sealants. The company employs over 2,800 people, has 25 production sites and is represented in 31 countries. It is owned by the U.S. investment company SK Capital Partners, which focuses on industrial holdings in the specialty materials, chemicals and healthcare sectors.
