The Mannheim-based company PHOENIX Pharmahandel is Germany’s leading distributor of pharmaceuticals and healthcare products. The company is part of the Merckle group of companies, which is also strongly located in Baden-Württemberg. Place 2: GEHE Pharma Handel GmbH, Stuttgart: 21.2 billion Euro turnover (McKesson Europe, 2019)
GEHE Pharma Handel will soon be known under a different name, as the merger with Alliance Healthcare Deutschland AG, another wholesaler, has already been decided. GEHE, as a subsidiary of McKesson Europe AG, belongs to the US group McKesson and represents about one seventh of the German pharmaceutical wholesale trade. McKesson is to hold 30 percent of the new company.
Place 3: dm-drogerie markt GmbH + Co KG, Karlsruhe: 11.2 billion euros turnover (2018/19)
dm is Europe’s largest drugstore chain with 62,000 employees and approximately 3,700 branches. About 75 percent of its turnover is generated in Germany, where more than half of its branches are also located. The company has been in existence since 1973 and has expanded rapidly since then. Internationally, the dm focus is on Central and Southeast Europe.
