Place 1: Merck KGaA, Darmstadt: 16.2 billion euros sales (2019)

The traditional Darmstadt company Merck can look back on a 250-year history. From its beginnings as a pharmacy to today’s major company and corporation, the business revolves around pharmaceuticals. Chemical products are another mainstay. With around 57,000 employees, the company produces and sells its products worldwide. Merck is owned by the descendants of the company founder Friedrich Jakob Merck.

Place 2: Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH, Frankfurt/Main: 4.9 billion euros sales (2019)

Sanofi (officially: Sanofi-aventis Groupe) is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical groups with sales of 36.1 billion euros (2019). The French group was created in 2004 through the merger of Sanofi-Synthélabo and Aventis. The German activities are bundled under the roof of Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH. This company employs around 9,000 people, most of them at its headquarters in Frankfurt’s Industriepark Höchst. A good 30 percent of Sanofi Germany’s sales are generated in Germany, the remainder from internal Group services.

Place 3: STADA Arzneimittel AG, Bad Vilbel: EUR 2.6 billion in sales (2019)

STADA was founded in Dresden in 1895 as a pharmacists’ cooperative. In 1956, the company headquarters was moved to Bad Vilbel via several intermediate stations, and in 1970 the company was converted into a stock corporation. Generics and over-the-counter drugs for pharmacies form the core business. Probably STADA’s best-known product is the pain reliever Paracetamol. The company has more than 10,000 employees. The main owner is the American financial investor Bain Capital.

Place 4: Merz Pharma GmbH & Co. KGaA, Frankfurt/Main: 1.1 billion euros sales (2018/19)

Merz Pharma has existed since 1908 and is family-owned. The Merz Pharma GmbH & Co. KGaA forms the bracket for the two pillars of the business: pharmaceutical products with the two business units Aesthetics and Special Neurology as well as Consumer Care with health, beauty and wellness products (Merz Spezial brand). Merz Pharma has over 3,000 employees.

Place 5: Biotest AG, Dreieich: 419 million Euro sales (2019)

Drugs derived from human blood plasma are the speciality of Biotest. They are used in clinical immunology, haematology and in intensive and emergency medicine. The company was founded in 1946. Dreieich in the district of Offenbach is the company headquarters and production site. Biotest has about 1,600 employees. For a long time, the founding family controlled the company. In 2018, Biotest was acquired by the Chinese investor Creat Group.
