Mannheim-based medical technology company develops bioplastics

Plastics have been used in the automotive industry since time immemorial – not only the legendary GDR Trabant with its body made of thermoset stands for this. Even in the latest vehicles, many parts in the engine compartment and interior cabin are made of plastic. This is a problem, because plastics often have a negative environmental and climate balance. However, this does not apply to the new bioplastic product from the Mannheim-based Röchling Group. This article is based on the unique List of the 100 largest medical technology companies in Germany.

  • Article based on database of the 100 most important medical technology companies in Germany

Plastic made from renewable raw materials

Röchling BioBoom is a pioneering development. It is the first polylactide (PLA)-based biopolymer with a proportion of renewable raw materials of at least 90 percent. The new bioplastic can replace conventional plastics in automotive production based on polyester, polystyrene, polyolefins or polyamides. The special advantage: compared to polyolefins, bioplastics have up to 70 percent lower emissions of climate pollutants, and even up to 90 percent lower emissions compared to polyamides. The new plastic meets all the technical requirements and specifications of automotive manufacturers. It is offered in three standard grades that are suitable for vehicle interiors as well as for installation in engine compartments.

Röchling SE & Co. KG, headquartered in Mannheim, Germany, is a German group of companies with a focus on medical technology and plastics processing. The company is a leader in this field and also one of the largest companies in Germany. In addition to the Medical division, there are the two other divisions “Automotive” and “Industrial”. The development of Röchling BioBoom falls under the responsibility of the Automotive division. In view of growing environmental awareness, production that is as environmentally friendly as possible is becoming an increasingly important competitive argument for car manufacturers. By using bioplastics instead of conventional plastics, the environmental balance of one’s own production can be sustainably improved.
