The venture capital industry is investing millions of dollars in startups which are trying to build innovative solutions.

#3: Ripple, Payment, $93.6M

As “the world’s only enterprise blockchain solution for global payments”, Ripple offers blockchain infrastructure for cross-border payments. Already more than 90 customers, for example UniCredit, Santander or UBS, are using the company’s services. Ripple’s three main products are xCurrent (processing payments), xRapid (sourcing liquidity) and xVia (sending payments). The startup is funded by Andreessen Horowitz, Accenture, Santander Innoventures, SBI Investment and many other investors in the amount of almost $94M.

#2: Blockstream, Infrastructure, $126M

Through so called sidechains, Blockstream enhances privacy and functionality of blockchain systems. Founded by Adam Back and Mark Friedenbach in 2014, Blockstream already raised a funding of $126M and even acquired another startup. Adam Back worked after his PhD in Computer Science in different cryptography roles. Mark Friedenbach has worked as developer for the NASA.

#1: Coinbase, Digital Currency Wallet, $217.21M

Coinbase, is according to itself, “the world’s most popular way to buy and sell bitcoin, ethereum, and litecoin”. In 2012, Brian Armstrong, a former Airbnb software engineer, and Fred Ehrsam, who started his career as a Goldman Sachs trader, founded the startup. Acting as digital currency wallet, people already have exchanged more than $20B through the portal. So far, there were six funding rounds since 2012. Andreessen Horowitz, the NYSE and Blockchain Capital are amongst the investors.
