List of the 5 largest companies in Baden-Württemberg

Baden-Württemberg accounts for 15 percent of Germany’s gross domestic product (GDP) and, as a territorial state, is surpassed only by Bavaria in terms of GDP per capita. Baden-Württemberg’s economy is particularly characterized by its strong industry. This is also reflected in our list of the TOP 5:

1. Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Stuttgart

The name Mercedes-Benz stands for automotive history par excellence and the group from Stuttgart is Germany’s number 2 automaker today – a global player. The Mercedes-Benz brand stands for premium vehicles with an excellent reputation worldwide. At the end of 2021, Daimler AG was split into Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Daimler Truck Holding AG, both of which are part of the DAX-40

Update 2023: In February 2023, Mercedes-Benz announced a future collaboration with the Alphabet technology group to integrate Google Maps into the Mercedes-Benz navigation system. The collaboration is unique in the German automotive industry – after all, it is the first time that an automaker has opened up its operating system in such a way.

2. Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart

Robert Bosch traces its roots back to a backyard workshop in Stuttgart founded in 1886. Today, Bosch is a global conglomerate operating as an automotive supplier and manufacturer of industrial technology (Rexroth), power tools, household appliances, and energy and building technology. The automotive supply business accounts for a good half of the group’s sales. Bosch is the world’s largest automotive supplier. The company has around 395,000 associates. The non-profit Robert Bosch Stiftung holds 94 percent of the shares, but the descendants of company founder Robert Bosch still have influence.

3. ZF FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG, Friedrichshafen

Luftschiff Zeppelin and Max Maag Zahnräderfabrik founded Zahnradfabrik GmbH, now ZF FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG, in 1915. With a good 153,000 employees, the ZF Group is the fifth-largest automotive supplier worldwide and a leader in driveline and chassis technology. The Zeppelin Foundation, which is administered by the city of Friedrichshafen, owns over 90 percent of the company’s shares. Transmissions, steering systems, axles, clutches, shock absorbers, and other chassis components make up ZF’s core business. In addition, there is the Industrial Technology division with driveline technology and systems for machinery, aviation, marine, and special vehicle systems.

4. Porsche AG, Stuttgart

The car manufacturer Porsche AG emerged from a design office of the carmaker Ferdinand Porsche. Headquartered in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the company is best known for its sleek sports cars. Production takes place primarily at the main plant in Zuffenhausen and at the Leipzig plant. There has been a close relationship with Volkswagen from the very beginning. Ferdinand Porsche is the inventor of the legendary VW Beetle. Porsche AG has been part of the Volkswagen Group since 2009. The company has around 35,000 employees.

5. SAP SE, Walldorf

Five former IBM employees founded SAP in 1972. This has developed into Germany’s and Europe’s largest software company with over 100,000 employees. Today, most of SAP’s shares are in free float, but two of its founders still hold stakes. SAP develops software for business process management and support for companies. The solutions cover all business areas: Procurement, Production, Sales, Logistics, Accounting, Controlling and Human Resources. The main product line is SAP ERP (ERP = Enterprise Resource Planning), a networked enterprise information and planning system with various components and industry solutions.

Update 2024: Together with Infosys, SAP is presenting a sustainable industry cloud solution at the beginning of 2024 to meet the growing demand for ecologically responsible services.

Around 1.5 million people work in industry in Baden-Württemberg. It accounts for around one third of the economic output of the state. In addition to large companies, there is also a large number of medium-sized industrial companies. Many of them are world market leaders in their field as hidden champions. A strong export orientation is typical for the entire industry in the state. Many companies operate worldwide.

The three most important branches of industry are mechanical engineering, the automotive industry including supply industry, electrical engineering companies and the metal industry.
