biggest german pump manufacturers

List of 3 major pump manufacturers in Germany

Pumps and compressors are used in many areas – in private properties, in industrial production and in vehicle construction. More than 200 companies employing nearly 50,000 people make up the German pump manufacturing industry. The companies on which we have written reports are part of our list of the largest pump manufacturers in Germany.

1. GEA Group AG, Düsseldorf

The GEA Group emerged from the traditional Metallgesellschaft and has been operating under this name since 2005. It is an industrial group that supplies a wide range of components and technical solutions for industrial processes. These include pumps and valves. In this area, GEA Group manufactures hygienic pumps, high-pressure piston pumps and jet pumps. GEA’s business comprises five divisions: Separation & Flow Technologies, Farm Technologies, Liquid & Powder Technologies, Food & Healthcare Technologies and Heating & Refrigeration Technologies. Pump technology is mainly located in the Separation & Flow Technologies Division. GEA achieved sales revenue of €4.7 billion in 2021.

Update 2024: In the period from November 2023 to the beginning of 2025, GEA Group AG’s share buyback program worth EUR 400 million will take effect.

2. KSB SE & Co. KGaA, Frankenthal

KSB’s history began in 1871 as Frankenthaler Maschinen- und Armaturenfabrik. Today, pump technology forms the core of the business. In 2021, the company generated sales revenue of around €2.3 billion and employed more than 15,000 people. Around two thirds of sales are generated with centrifugal pumps. The most important sales market is Europe, followed by Asia. KSB manufactures in 16 countries and sells its products worldwide. KSB became a public limited company back in 1887 and has been listed on the stock exchange since 1895. The company’s main shareholder is the non-profit KSB Foundation. 16 percent of the ordinary shares and 80 percent of the preference shares are free float.

3. Wilo SE, Dortmund

The pump manufacturer Wilo emerged from a copper and brassware factory founded in Dortmund in 1871. Wilo owes its name and current business model to its third owner Wilhelm Opländer, who developed the world’s first heating pump in the 1920s. This invention had resounding success and became formative. Pump systems for building services, water management and various industrial sectors define today’s Wilo business. The company has over 7,700 employees and generated sales of around 1.7 billion euros in 2021. In addition to Dortmund, Wilo also produces in Oschersleben and Hof in Germany and has 15 production sites worldwide.

Update 2023: Climate neutrality will continue to play an important role for Wilo in 2023. The company’s new headquarters, Wilopark, was opened in 2022 and already enables climate-neutral production. This is the direction the Group will continue to take in the future.
