Why Deutsche Bahn Leads in 2025
- Revenue strength: With over €45 billion in revenue in 2023, Deutsche Bahn remains by far the largest Berlin-based company. Although the figure was slightly lower than in 2022 (€52 billion), it exceeds the revenues of Berlin’s digital and energy companies many times over.
- System relevance & market position: According to the Integrated Report 2023 (cf. pp. 6–8), Deutsche Bahn is the backbone of German mobility – with over one billion passengers annually in passenger transport and global logistics activities via DB Schenker.
- Number of employees: With more than 306,000 employees, Deutsche Bahn is not only the largest revenue generator but also the largest employer in the capital.
- Investments & future projects: The report highlights major investments in infrastructure and digitalization, including the expansion of high-performance networks, the transformation to climate-neutral operations by 2040, and digital mobility platforms.
Competitor Assessment
Zalando and Delivery Hero are among Berlin’s most important digital companies but generate revenues of around €10 billion. HelloFresh achieved just under €7.6 billion in 2023, growing dynamically but still far behind Deutsche Bahn. 50Hertz reached a peak of €10.1 billion but is specialized in the energy sector and much smaller in terms of employees. Deutsche Bahn thus remains the undisputed No. 1 in Berlin.
