Why SAP is the Largest German IT Company in 2025
- Revenue leadership: Group revenue in 2023 is clearly at the top in Germany; the gap to the next competitors is very large.
- Unique market role: SAP solutions are business-critical worldwide – according to company data, SAP customers generate 87% of global trade volume. This underlines reach and relevance in the enterprise segment.
- Strong cloud business: In 2023 SAP reported cloud revenues of around €13.7 billion; the Total Cloud Backlog amounted to €44 billion. These recurring revenues and contractually secured order backlogs ensure future growth – a structural advantage over many competitors.
- Scaling & investments: SAP is investing heavily in enterprise AI (around €1 billion over the next two years), thereby enhancing the productivity of its suite – an additional competitive advantage in its core enterprise software business.
- Capital market signal: At the end of 2023, market capitalization stood at €171 billion – a sign of investor confidence in profitability, cash flows, and technological roadmap.
Assessment of Competitors
Delivery Hero is a global platform company and undoubtedly a technological heavyweight – however, its focus lies on marketplace/logistics platforms rather than enterprise software. Bechtle and Computacenter (DE) are leading system houses with strong consulting and procurement services, but naturally lower margins/multiples compared to large-scale software providers. Rohde & Schwarz is broadly diversified (including measurement technology, electronics, security-related technologies) and is not considered a pure-play software company. In the direct software/enterprise application segment, SAP remains the clear #1.
