From VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden to Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH

Dresden became an aviation centre in Germany with the establishment of the Luftwaffe during the Third Reich. After the Second World War, the GDR leadership decided in 1954 to establish its own aviation industry. For this purpose, VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden was founded in 1955, using the existing infrastructure. In 1961, after the cessation of aircraft construction, this became VEB Flugzeugwerft Dresden. It was mainly concerned with the maintenance and repair of military aircraft. Already in 1989, shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall, a cooperation between Flugzeugwerft Dresden and Airbus was initiated. In 1990, this cooperation led to the foundation of Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH, which today continues the tradition of the Dresden aircraft shipyard in a modified form.Source: Listenchampion Picture source: emanuviews via Unsplash
