Place 1: PHOENIX Pharmahandel GmbH & Co KG, Mannheim: 25.8 billion euros turnover (2018/19)
PHOENIX Pharmahandel is part of the Merckle Group – a German conglomerate focusing on pharmaceutical production and trade. The company operates internationally and supplies a total of around 56,000 pharmacies in 27 countries with drugs and healthcare products. In addition, PHOENIX also operates various pharmacy chains as a retailer.
Place 2: GEHE Pharma Handel GmbH, Stuttgart: 21.2 billion euros turnover (McKesson Europe, 2019)
GEHE Pharma Handel is the German subsidiary of McKesson Europe AG, which in turn is majority-owned by the American McKesson Group. McKesson offers logistics and services in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. GEHE has a market share of almost 15 percent in Germany. In future, the business will be merged with Alliance Healthcare Deutschland AG in a joint venture.
Place 3: Alliance Healthcare Deutschland AG, Frankfurt/Main: 4.8 billion euros turnover (2018)
The pharmaceutical wholesaler Alliance Healthcare Deutschland is part of the US group Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) and until 2013 was called Andreae-Noris Zahn AG – in short ANZAG. At the end of 2019 the merger with GEHE Pharma Handel in a joint venture was announced. WBA will hold 70 percent of the new company. Alliance Healthcare has a market share of approximately 12 percent. The joint venture would catch up with the industry leader PHOENIX Pharmahandel.
