Munich-based machine builder wins sustainability award

Last Updated on April 26, 2022

Sustainability is the trump card – in view of climate change, environmental pollution and limited resources, more and more companies are recognizing the need for sustainable business practices. Since 2008, the German Sustainability Award has been presented to pioneering companies in this field. As sustainability has many dimensions, the award is presented in different categories. New this year is the German Sustainability Award in the category “Responsible Design”. Here, Siemens Mobility was able to convince the jury with its innovative Mireo train. This article is based on the unique List of the 200 largest mechanical engineering companies in Germany.

    • Article based on database of the 200 largest mechanical engineering companies in Germany
    • Detailed information on the field of activity (production technology, energy plants, construction machinery, packaging machinery, etc.)
    • Including: turnover (2015-2018), number of employees, email, address, telephone number, management, etc.

Award-winning pioneer in the “responsible design” category

The “Responsible Design” category honors products that stand out for their particularly sustainable design. Three subcategories have been defined: Icons, Pioneers and Visions. The pioneers category honors products that have been on the market for less than five years – that is, products that have already been successfully launched but are still in the process of tapping their market potential.

This year’s trailblazer design winner fits precisely into this (sub)category: the Mireo regional and commuter train from Siemens Mobility. The first Mireo fleet has been in service on the Rhine Valley network in Baden-Württemberg since mid-2020. A further 180 trains have already been ordered. The Mireo combines high energy efficiency and minimal use of resources with a compelling design and a comfortable barrier-free travel experience for passengers. The Mireo is also offered with alternative drive technologies (hydrogen and battery operation).

The Siemens Group is one of the largest companies in Germany – since 2018 the Siemens Mobility GmbH is a business unit of the Siemens Group organized as an independent subsidiary based in Munich. The company is focused on rail and train technology. It builds train carriages, railcars and locomotives, plans and implements railway systems, offers signaling and lighting technology as well as modern solutions for controlling rail traffic. Also relevant in Munich is the relatively new Space Valley Ottobrunn.
