List of 3 large mid-sized companies in Germany

1. Friedrich Boysen GmbH & Co. KG

Boysen has an extremely high level of expertise in the field of exhaust technology. The product range extends from catalytic converters and silencers to entire exhaust systems. This makes the company a very important player for the complete automotive landscape. At 27 locations, the approx. 5,000 employees – nearly 2,000 of whom are employed by Friedrich Boysen GmbH & Co. KG – are constantly working on innovations in the fields of energy and environmental technology, for example components for electric vehicles or future-proof energy storage systems and fuel cells. In 2021, the company, headquartered in Altensteig, Baden-Württemberg, generated sales of 1,232 million euros.

Update 2023: As part of its transformation strategy toward hydrogen technology, Boysen is one of the major supporters of Iontrak GmbH from Zell unter Aichelberg. The start-up deals with upgrading trucks with hydrogen drives and was founded by the state of Baden-Württemberg out of the project called Hylix-B.

2. Benteler Automobiltechnik GmbH

Benteler is a true heavyweight in automotive technology, and nearly all major vehicle manufacturers come to the company’s extensive automotive know-how when it comes to key issues such as safety, the environment and efficiency. Whether it’s bodywork, chassis or engine, the company’s specialized product range, high-quality materials and diverse technologies make it a very relevant player in the automotive industry, with sales of 1,166 million euros (2021).

3. Bitburger Brewery Group GmbH

This family-owned company from Bitburg in the southern Eifel region is a classic, German medium-sized enterprise. There is also a partnership in the area of distribution with, among others, the craft beer brewery CREW Republic from Munich. The parent company of Bitburger Brauerei is Th. Simon GmbH & Co. hidden champions

Industry, technology, food, consumer goods sectors and more

The most important medium-sized companies in Germany are particularly attractive customers due to their solid market position and long-term business orientation. The family-run companies attach great importance to a trusting, future-oriented cooperation and are regarded as reliable negotiating partners. Many of the companies listed are family businesses with a long tradition and deep roots in the region. Germany’s largest medium-sized companies are extraordinarily diverse, yet they are often united by decades of experience, global orientation and an innovative mindset.

The middle class as the backbone of the German economy

Hardly any other country is as characterised by small and medium-sized enterprises as Germany. Especially in rural regions, there are a large number of medium-sized companies that are world market leaders in their sectors or play an important role in certain industries. Due to the importance of the automotive industry, this is especially true for automotive suppliers and companies from the mechanical engineering sector, but the strength of the German middle class is also enormous in other areas. The large number of medium-sized companies is a great opportunity for sales representatives of numerous companies in German-speaking countries. However, approaching relevant, new partners often turns out to be more difficult than hoped. This is not least due to the fact that comprehensive market overviews are scarce. This is where Research Germany comes in and provides an inexpensive way to get an overview of the entire German medium-sized business sector in one list.

Comprehensive overview of all hidden champions

The term “hidden champions” was introduced for companies that are world market leaders in their field of business and yet unknown to most people. This definition already illustrates the challenge for business people looking for partners in this field: identifying hidden champions often involves tedious research. From now on, you can dispense with hours of market research by using Research Germany’s address database. Our years of experience in market research in Germany enable us to track down relevant companies that are often overlooked. Gain a competitive advantage by relying on our dataset and approaching high-calibre partners before your competitor does.
