1. BRITA GmbH, Taunusstein: 617 million euros in sales
BRITA drinking water filters are familiar in many German households. Heinz Hankammer put his idea of optimising tap water with filter technology into practice in 1966. He named the company he founded after his daughter Brita. BRITA filters are available in various formats and consist of an ion exchanger and activated carbon mixture. This reduces the lime and chlorine content of the water through a binding effect. Odour- and taste-disturbing substances are reduced and the water quality is improved – a successful model that has made BRITA great! Today, the company employs more than 2,000 people. The company is still owned by the Hankammer family through its holding company Hanvest Holding.
2. CABB Group GmbH, Sulzbach: 520 million euros turnover
The acronym CABB stands for Clariant Acetyl Building Blocks. Clariant is a Swiss chemical group from which CABB was spun off as an independent company in 2003. Based in Sulzbach, Germany, the company specializes in the production of individual molecules for the agrochemical, specialty chemical and pharmaceutical industries. CABB is a leader in the field of high-purity monochloroacetic acids (MCA). Chloroacetic acid is a basic ingredient for many crop protection products. The company has five production sites, the largest of which is located in Pratteln near Basel in Switzerland. Since 2014, CABB has been owned by Permira, a British private equity investor based in London.
3. VITRONIC Dr.-Ing. Stein Bildverarbeitungssysteme GmbH, Wiesbaden: 152 million euros in sales
Digital image processing is needed in many places today: in medical technology, security checks (body scanners), transportation, logistics, car manufacturing and for quite a few other applications. VITRONIC is considered a leading specialist in this field. The company may only be known to insiders, but everyone knows about the control bridges on motorways for truck tolls – a VITRONIC solution. The company was founded in 1984 and operates its business worldwide from Wiesbaden. VITRONIC is represented by subsidiaries, sales offices and partners on four continents. The VITRONIC Group employs more than 1,000 people around the globe.
