List of the 5 largest coatings and paint manufacturers in Germany

There are over 200 German companies in the coatings and paints industry. Many are chemical companies that are also active in other areas. Here are the 5 largest coatings and paints manufacturers.

1. BASF SE, Ludwigshafen

BASF is Germany’s leading chemical company with more than 110,000 employees. Coatings and paints are produced in the Coatings division (segment: Chemicals). The subsidiary BASF Coatings in Münster is responsible for this. Production focus: automotive, automotive refinish and industrial coatings as well as architectural coatings. BASF Coatings has 2,300 employees.

Update 2023: In the Coatings business unit, BASF continues to be an important partner for industry, for example for automotive coatings, automotive refinish coatings or for architectural coatings. This is also reflected in the figures: In 2022, BASF Coatings achieved global sales of approximately four billion euros.

2. Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, Düsseldorf

Henkel is a German consumer goods manufacturer that is primarily associated with detergents or beauty care products. However, in its Adhesive Technologies business sector, Henkel also produces adhesives, sealants, paints and functional coatings for industry. The Group employs almost 53,000 people.

Update 2024: Henkel strengthens its “Hair Care” division and acquires Vidal Sassoon in China. The Group expects the acquisition to significantly expand and improve the Chinese hair care market.

3. Covestro AG, Leverkusen

Covestro was created in 2015 by spinning off the plastics division from the Bayer Group. The new group has around 16,500 employees. Coatings products belong to the Solutions and Specialties segment, here to the Coatings and Adhesives business unit. Among other things, this unit produces precursors for coatings, adhesives and sealants.

Update 2023: Reducing CO2 emissions is a highly relevant topic for the (chemical) industry. The German chemical companies Covestro and Lanxess announce at the beginning of 2023 that they will henceforth approach the production of basic chemicals in a more climate-friendly way. CO2 emissions are to be reduced by up to 120,000 metric tons per year.

Industrial paints

Overview of the German paint and coating industry

Our list contains the largest companies in the paint and varnish industry. Varnishes are coating materials that are either in liquid or powder form and can be produced in any color imaginable. Varnish has three different functions. Protection, decoration, and function. The world’s largest area of application for coatings is architectural paints (facades, etc.), but coatings also play a key role in the automotive and aircraft industries. The largest manufacturer of coatings in Germany is BASF SE, which produces everything from surface coatings and automotive paints to piano finishes.
