1. 3i Group plc
London-based 3i Group is one of the most renowned private equity investors in the world – and also one of the largest listed PE firms. The fund was launched in 1946 as a joint venture of British banks. In June 2022, for example, 3i announced that it had sold French healthcare company Havea to BC Partners for €1.1 billion. 3i invests in business and technology services companies, consumer goods companies, healthcare companies and industrial companies. The company is also an active startup investor.
[Update 2023]: New to the portfolio recently is Ahrensburg-based software developer xSuite Group GmbH. With the help of 3i Group, the company aims to continue working on its international presence and sustainably strengthen its position as a leading provider of APIA (Accounts Payable Invoice Automation).
2. Epiris LLP
Another major UK private equity investor is Epiris. Since 2011, the firm has invested over GBP 1.6 billion in 25 companies. Portfolio companies include animal identification provider Allflex and care company Appello. In July 2022, the company announced a GBP 1.7 billion takeover offer for financial publisher Euromoney Institutional Investor. The takeover bid was made jointly with Astorg.
3. OMERS Private Equity
OMERS is originally the private equity arm of the Pension Plan of the Province of Ontario, Canada. However, the private equity firm also has an office in London and is an active investor in the UK PE market. The firm manages assets totaling $19.8 billion and focuses on investments in the healthcare, services, industrial and technology sectors. In July 2022, OMERS Private Equity announced that it plans to acquire Network Plus. The company is a leading provider of utility and infrastructure repairs in the United Kingdom. Headquartered in Worsley, the company employs more than 5,000 people.
