Below we present the three largest hospital operators in Germany that are part of our comprehensive list. The dataset is available for immediate download as an Excel list and contains more than 150 hospital operators from Germany.

1. Helios Kliniken GmbH (Berlin)

Helios is the largest private hospital operator in Europe and is part of the Fresenius SE & Co. KGaA. In Germany alone, Helios owns 87 clinics and 130 medical care centers. Sales in Germany were €6.7 billion in 2021, and as much as €10.9 billion worldwide. More than 123,000 employees work for Fresenius Helios worldwide, providing care to more than 22 million people per year.

Update 2023: Particularly through and during the Corona pandemic, the approximately 21,000 employees of the Helios Group were enormously challenged. The hospital group has now reached an agreement with the trade union ver.di, which includes tax- and levy-free one-off payments. In addition, incomes will be increased by four percent – but by at least 150 euros – from July 2023 and July 2024 respectively.

Update 2024: Following the appointment of Ferdinand Nitschke as Digital Innovation Officer, it has now been announced that Dr. Pia Eikemeier will take over the new position of Head of Transformation Management on February 1, 2024.

2. Asklepios Kliniken GmbH & Co. KGaA (Hamburg)

In terms of revenue, Asklepios Kliniken is the second largest hospital group in Germany. The company was founded in Hamburg in 1985 by Dr. Bernard gr. Broermann, an auditor and lawyer. 67,000 employees in 170 facilities throughout Germany provide care for more than 3.5 million people each year. These include Europe’s largest hospital cluster in Hamburg and six maximum-care hospitals.

3. Sana Kliniken AG (Munich)

Sana Kliniken, headquartered in Munich, describes itself as an integrated healthcare provider. The company’s holdings include hospitals as well as service providers from outpatient care, hospital services, companies from the field of medical aid provision and the Sana Digital division. In total, 55 hospitals and 43 medical care centers belong to the hospital group, making Sana number three in Germany. Revenues have increased steadily in recent years and will reach €3.0 billion in 2021.
